RARE BABY NAMES
Terms of use
Ground rules for a considerate place to choose a name.
About the service
Rare Baby Names operates from Texas, United States and provides name discovery, information, saved choices, baby cards and private Family Circles. These terms describe the use of those features. Our privacy notice explains how information is handled.
These terms are effective October 19, 2026. Applicable terms and material changes must be presented clearly before they are relied on; publication does not retroactively create an agreement with existing preview users.
Accounts and safe access
You must be at least 18 to create an account or accept a Family Circle invitation. Do not invite someone under 18. Browsing names does not require an account. The 18+ confirmation is self-declaration; it does not verify your age.
Use a Google or personal Microsoft identity you are entitled to use. Keep provider accounts, sessions and invitation links secure. Do not impersonate someone else, share their session, bypass restrictions or access a circle without permission. Separate provider identities are not automatically merged by matching email addresses.
Rate limits and service limits help protect availability and prevent abuse. Do not overload the site, exploit vulnerabilities, distribute unlawful material or interfere with other people’s use. Report an access or security concern through Contact, without including passwords, tokens or session cookies.
Family Circle and contributions
The owner controls the tree, invitations, access, finalists, voting settings and final name. Members participate within those controls. Explain custom vote weights, closing and reveal times to participants. A vote helps a family decide; it does not require parents to choose the winning name.
Share only information you are entitled to share. Keep discussion respectful. Do not post harassment, private credentials or unnecessary identifying or sensitive details about children or other people. An invitation is for its intended recipient and must be accepted after sign-in.
You retain any rights you have in your contributions. You permit Rare Baby Names to store, process and display them as needed to provide and secure the features you choose, including display to authorized circle participants. This permission does not transfer ownership or make private contributions public. Deletion and recovery limits are explained in the privacy notice.
Personal Love, Maybe and Passed lists stay separate. “Add from my saved names” shares only the first names selected. Private full-name cards are owner-only in Family Circle; review any file before sharing it outside the site.
Use name information with context
Meanings, origins and pronunciations can differ by source, language and tradition. Published counts and ranks describe a spelling, place and year; they do not determine a person’s identity, ancestry or a name’s suitability. Counts may be rounded or withheld, and a missing record does not mean zero births.
You make the final naming decision. We do not promise complete coverage, one universally accepted meaning or that a name is registrable in every jurisdiction. Read source notes and check relevant local registration requirements. Report an error through Contact.
Sources, artwork and permitted use
Rare Baby Names does not own every name or historical fact. Statistics, licensed entries, artwork and adapted source text have different rights. Follow the credits, source links, license links and adaptation notices supplied with the relevant material.
Oddity Software entries are used under a publication license, not offered as an open dataset or for resale of the collection. Do not extract or resell that licensed collection. Other material may be reusable under its stated license, including CC BY-SA. Nothing here takes away rights an applicable open license or law grants.
Use sharing controls and cards for their intended purpose and retain required attribution. Do not remove required notices, misrepresent someone else’s work as yours, overload the service with automated requests or use the site to obtain a dataset you are not licensed to receive.
Availability and changes
We aim to keep the service useful and accurate, but it can have errors, interruptions or changing feature limits. We may restrict access reasonably needed to address abuse, security problems or unlawful use. Keep your own copies of files you want to retain, and contact us if you believe an access restriction was mistaken.
External sign-in, social and calendar services have their own terms and availability. Imported calendar reminders do not automatically update when a reveal changes here. Nothing in these terms excludes rights, remedies or liability that applicable law does not allow us to exclude.
Leaving and account deletion
You can change individual choices or card details without deleting your account. Account deletion is permanent, requires same-account sign-in verification and confirmation, and deletes owned circles only after a separate explicit warning. Ownership is not automatically transferred.
See Account deletion for what is removed, what remains and how to get help. Deletion does not delete an Auth0 profile, a Google/Microsoft account or external copies. Recovery copies follow separate retention and deletion-suppression safeguards; there is no promise that every archive disappears immediately or within 30 days.
Governing law and questions
Texas law and applicable United States federal law govern these terms, subject to mandatory rights and protections that apply to you. These terms do not require arbitration, impose a class-action waiver or select an assumed county or court.
For a question, concern or request, use Contact. We will identify the effective or updated date of published terms and give appropriate notice of material changes before relying on them.
